What Is Giclée? Digital reproductions, the precursor to Giclées, were originally developed in 1989 as a method of proofing. With the advent of compatible longevity ink sets, this technology was later adapted for fine art printmaking. The French word "gicler" means "to spray", hence the object of the spraying nozzle is the "giclée"(pronounced jhee-clay).
Original artwork is converted into a digital format, colour corrected including image manipulations if and as necessary, stored in digital files and sent directly to a high-resolution printer.
Giclée fine art prints are more precise than the best in traditional printmaking. No film, plates or screens are used. The prints have a higher apparent resolution than lithography and a dynamic colour range greater than serigraphy. A reputable atelier using longevity ink sets on acid-free papers and proper canvases can provide fine art prints with unsurpassed longevity.
Giclée prints are found in the finest galleries. Major museums worldwide archive and display giclées as part of their collections. Included are the Louvre, the Guggenheim, the Smithsonian and New York's Metropolitan Museum.
